The Cat Piano shortlisted for Oscar

THE CAT PIANO by Adelaide based, The People’s Republic of Animation, has been officially selected as one of 10 animated short films to advance in the voting process for the Best Animated Short Film award at the 82nd Academy Awards. It is the first South Australian short animation ever to be short-listed.
THE CAT PIANO, co-directed by Eddie White and Ari Gibson and produced by Jessica Brentnall was selected from 37 qualifying films. Also in competition are Pixar’s Partly Cloudy and A Matter of Loaf & Death, the latest Wallace & Gromit short. The Academy Awards Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Reviewing Committee will now select five nominees from among the 10 titles on the shortlist.
Narrated by Nick Cave, and featuring a beat poem about a noir city of singing cats, THE CAT PIANO has already enjoyed great success. The film premiered at 2009 BigPond Adelaide Film Festival where it won Audience Choice Award for Best Short Film and has gone on to win the Best Animation Short at The Melbourne International Film Festival 2009, the Yoram Gross Dendy Award for Best Animation Short at the Sydney Film Festival 2009, an IF (Inside Film) Award for Best Animation and is nominated for Best Short Animation at the AFI Awards 2009.
THE CAT PIANO was in official selection in the International Short Film Competition at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival (France) and has screened at a number of international film festivals around the world including LA Shorts Fest (Los Angeles, USA), Anima Mundi International Animation Festival (Brazil) and Bradford Animation Festival (UK).
The 82nd Academy Awards nominations will be announced 2nd February 2010.
